Fighting fit: The best foods for your immune system

A healthy diet is the best way to keep our immune systems fighting fit. But finding the best foods can sometimes be a time-consuming challenge, which is why we’ve done it for you.  So, if you’re looking for an easy way to keep your immune system fired up this flu season, check out five of the best immune-boosting foods we use to make our uber-healthy, great-tasting super shots.

1. Ginger

Ginger is a delicious source of antioxidants that may reverse chronic inflammation, a lingering immune response that keeps the body in a constant state of alertness, increasing the risk of illnesses from cancer to asthma. Luckily, ginger is a force to be reckoned with that’s loaded with potent antiviral, antibacterial and anticancer properties. It tastes great too, especially when blended with citrus fruits like lemon. Like ginger, lemon is packed with anti-inflammatory agents which reduce internal swelling and promote repair.

2. Beetroot

If you’re in the mood for an earthy taste, then beetroot is the food for you. It’s full of iron and folate, which keeps red blood cells healthy and enhances the immune system’s power to fight off illness.  They can also prevent anaemia, a condition that decreases immune function and the ability to fight infections.  It also gives a healthy dose of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that promotes the absorption of iron, supports pathogen barriers and even kills bacteria.

3. Carrots

At number three is the earthy, sweet taste of crunchy carrots, which give you a hearty dose of vitamin C, and remove free radicals.  They help repair damaged cells, combat inflammation and give your body a generous supply of beta-carotene, which increases disease-fighting cells.  They also help build immune-system defending antibodies to keep the pesky winter flu at bay.

4. Pomegranates

If you’re looking for a tasty way to chase off the winter flu, try pomegranates. The juice from a single pomegranate has 40 percent of your daily requirement of vitamin C, and a high concentration of antioxidants to prevent oxidative stress and damage. They also give a generous dose of the immune-boosting nutrient, vitamin E, and are currently being studied for their effects on infections and viruses.

5. Black Pepper

A sprinkle of black pepper makes meals delicious and super healthy.  Like the foods listed above, black pepper has anti-inflammatory,  antioxidant and antibacterial benefits which do wonders for your immune system.  It tastes great in drinks too. For generations, many people in South India have added black pepper to their morning coffee to kick start their day.
